There are certain possibilities of earning Crowns instead of purchasing them.
1.Watch In-Game Videos
Per every view you earn 10 Crowns.
Not always are any videos broadcasted.
2.Play Trivia Quizzes on FreeKIGames
You earn 10 Crowns per every successful quiz of result: 75% and above.
No more than 10 quizzes per day can be taken. That means 100 Crowns at most per day.
Every quiz has 12 questions. Answers are in multiple choice (4).
Same quiz can be retaken on the next day.
Login before taking the quizzes, and if you don't, then login after completing a quiz.
Technical problems during a quiz can usually be solved by Refresh button. 
Closing a browser and restarting a computer during a quiz erases the answered questions but does not result in a completed quiz, treating the cut-off quiz as untaken.
Claimed Crowns appear on the game account immediately.
It is possible to search for answers inside net browser during a quiz. The quizzes are not timed.

3.Small Crown rewards are given for some of Daily Assignments. For more information about Daily Assignments, see EVENTS.
4.Another way is begging. You can beg in many different places, inside and outside of the game, but it is much safer to beg outside.
5.Finally, there is an option of Invite-A-Friend. Crowns are issued to the invitor only if the friend starts an account and makes a purchase of at least 6 dollars - and most importantly redeems a friend code available here. Anybody can get a friend code, then they just need to provide it to the invited friends for them to redeem it. The friend code can be used many times. This is a minor way, because people rarely have rich friends these days.

 Entrance to one zone costs 750 Crowns inside Wizard City, and the cost is higher in further worlds. See here for details about zone pricing. However, by watching videos and taking quizzes, you can earn a sufficient amount for one zone within 10 days in earlier worlds, and within three weeks in later worlds.
